TIRANA, May 7 – At least eight people were detained during a large-scale police operation ordered by the Serious Crimes Prosecution Office in Saranda on Monday.
According to the authorities, the detainees are suspected of international drug trafficking.
Among the detainees is the Deputy Director of Saranda’s hospital Florenc Llanaj.
Local police sources mentioned the involvement of Rapid Intervention Force operatives, who have conducted housing inspections and personally interrogated suspects in some areas of the coastal city.
Police is yet to give any official details, but according to sources the group has been under investigation for a long time in international drug trafficking activities.
Saranda is a hub of transporting large quantities of marijuana to Greece through the land border, but also a transit point for the drug trafficking of heroin and cocaine to Europe.
