While political negotiations between the majority and the opposition were failing there were positive signs of a possible meeting between Prime Minister Sali Berisha of the Democratic Party and Tirana Mayor Edi Rama of the Socialist Party. Rama sent a letter to Berisha offering the hand of reconciliation, to forget their personal disgrudges, and collaborate for the electoral reform. To this suprirsing move, Berisha gave a surprising reaction. He reminded everyone that meeting was not excluded if they took into consideration he had met some times with Fatos Nano, Rama’s predecessor in the political post.
But what made this positive news somewhat negative was the fact that both insisted they would not resign from their stands. Berisha made it clear that the election date was out of discussion and that also the demand for new certificates specific to the elections was absurd. On the other side, Rama insisted that the preparation of the voters’ list and producing new certificates were the only solution to the existing political crisis, that was threatening the local polls planned for Jan. 20.
