Silent protest from the opposition

TIRANA, March 21 – A united opposition held a silent march along Tirana’s main Martyrs of the Nation Avenue on Friday to protest the government’s management of the disposal of ammunition and the Gerdec tragedy which killed at least 22 persons and injured more than 300.

All five opposition coalition political parties joined the call from the Socialist Party to march from Skanderbeg Square to the University building as marchers held lit candles.

When passing near the office of Prime Minister Sali Berisha they stopped to leave the lit candles on the ground.

The opposition has asked for Berisha’s resignation and, along with former Defense Minister Fatmir Mediu, asked for their parliamentary immunity to be lifted so an impartial investigation can be conducted.

The opposition accuses the government of being involved in the illegal sale of excess Albanian ammunition.

Berisha has rejected such calls and has said it is up to the prosecutor office to determine the causes of the accident, adding that the country’s security offices had failed in their duty and the Prime Minister has called for deep reforms.
