TIRANA, March 14 – Thousands of Albanians filled the main streets in Elbasan and Tirana last Friday to celebrate Summer Day, a national holiday marking the end of winter.
The Summer Day has its origins as a pagan holiday tied to the Cermenika Fairy Sanctuary, the home of the goddess of hunting, forests and all nature near the city of Elbasan. According to legend, the fairy came out the sanctuary only on March 14, turning the day into a popular celebration, a tradition in the central city of Elbasan.
A symbol of the day is the Elbasan’s “ballakume,” a traditional butter biscuit prepared in the city.
Prime Minister Edi Rama visited Elbasan, encouraging Albanians to look more to their talent and skills, to start small businesses or engage in private sector.
