TIRANA, Dec. 31 – Police have detained 41 Syrians who were trying to enter Albania illegally from Greece, authorities said.
They are to be deported back to Greece, as per Albania’s international practices, officials said.
The group of migrants was detained in the early morning hours near the border villages of Peshkepi and Gline in Gjirokastra district. The group included four women and three children.
Syrians fleeing the war in their home country usually try to use Albania as a transit country to reach western European countries. Sometimes they aim to go to Montenegro in the north which seems to be an easier place to cross into Croatia, Slovenia or Italy.
This is the latest in a series of migrant groups Albanian border officers have caught up with in the past few months.
