TIRANA, April 28 – The Albanian parliament commission in charge of the territorial reform launched its formal operation Monday without the presence of the opposition members.
Bashkim Fino, Socialist lawmaker who heads the commission, repeated the call to the opposition for the participation into the commission even while it is working.
The Socialists are rushing to complete the reform during this parliament session as next year there will be held local elections.
The opposition has complained that the leftist government is trying to profit from the new territorial division.
But they have inexplicably turned down calls for participation though they were offered equal opportunities and the right of veto for any decision.
The new territorial reform will divide the country into new districts that are no less than 30,000 inhabitants, an effort which they say will save at least $80 million to the public budget.
