TIRANA, Feb. 15 – The alleged discovery of a mass grave with victims of the former politically persecuted, executed by the former communist regime, has also sparked a debate and made known that some four thousand are still missing.
The Association of Former Victims of Political Prosecution said that 4,000 Albanian victims of the communist regime were still missing.
A day earlier forensic teams started investigating and collecting the remains of 19 people found in a mass grave near the village of Linza, just outside Tirana. The bodies were buried up to three meters deep. Ammunition casings found in the area suggest the dead were executed. Police assisting in the investigation have asked families of the suspected victims to provide DNA in order to confirm their identities.
The former political persecuted urged authorities to continue checking for remains and also compensate the living for their suffering.
