TIRANA, March 21 – The promotion of religious harmony was the focus of an international conference on Islam and global peace held last week in Tirana with the participation of senior officials, religious leaders, diplomats and scholars.

The conference was organized by a university associated with Albania’s Muslim Community Organization, Hena e Plote Beder, as well as the U.S. and EU embassies in Tirana.

It focused on religion in general and Islam in particular in light of recent global developments, which have included the use of religion for extremist political purposes.

The conference discussed religion’s role in calming down the conflicts as well as cultural and religious diversity issues.

Participants and scholars from the United States, Italy, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Turkey, Kosovo, Macedonia, Serbia, Montenegro, Croatia as well as Bosnia and Herzegovina provided an overview of Islam in general and religious coexistence.

Albanian Muslim Community leader Skender Brucaj said that many problems could be easily resolved through dialogue and peace.
