TIRANA, July 25 – The Tirana International Airport (TIA) started work, last Friday, on another modernization project.
Phase B of the Airport modernization will significantly increase its operational capacities, and will have as its center piece being the expansion of the new passenger terminal.
“We know that the development of an airport is inextricably linked with the development of the region it is in. By turning the first sod in the terminal expansion, we are initiating the second milestone of the airport’s growth. We are confident that both Tirana and the surrounding area will profit. On that note, we wish the airport and the region continued prosperity,” said Dr. Reinhard Kalenda, Chairman of TIA’s Administrative Council and CEO of HOCHTIEF AirPort. Albanian Prime Minister Berisha praised the airport as the most successful concession in the country.
“I want to express our thanks and our gratitude for the excellent work that you have done since April of 2005 through today. In record time you have built a new airport, which is among the most beautiful airports I have seen. On the other hand, you have brought a very appropriate and cultivated service to the airport, while at the same time you have put in place the best security standards,” said Berisha.
The physical expansion of the terminal will include 14 additional check-in desks, baggage handling facilities, new entrances, three airline counters, three airside gates, and additional offices on the first floor.
The expansion of the terminal will add an additional 3,943 m2 with the height of the structure ranging from seven to 13.5 meters. The construction of the new baggage handling facilities covers 890 mҮ This leads to a total size of the expansion of 4,833 mҮ
The size of the building will be 40,000 mӮ
