TIRANA, March 13 – Tirana will have its first ever large underground parking with a capacity of 1,000 parking spaces, contributing to one of the major issues for drivers in the capital. The 9,000 m2 four-storey underground parking at the ‘Italia’ square in front of the national stadium will be built under a concession contract with the Municipality of Tirana. The parking lot worth 1.6 billion lek, Euro 11.3 million, will be built by Gener 2, an Albanian construction company.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, Tirana Mayor Lulzim Basha said ‘construction would kick off soon, and be an important source of creating more jobs,” pledging that other similar parking lots would be created in other Tirana neighbourhoods.
“Lack of parking spaces is one of the main causes of heavy traffic and pollution in Tirana,” said Basha, describing the new parking spaces as a key component of the new Tirana urban plan.
“We are in the final stage of Tirana’s new urban plan and are working in parallel with the design of strategic investments such as the extension of the capital’s central boulevard, the rehabilitation of the Tirana River, the construction of new parks, the construction of a new multi-modal terminal for urban and inter-urban passengers, but all these efforts would be incomplete without an appropriate mosaic of underground and above-parking lots and a careful policy of parking in the capital’s streets,” added Basha.
