TIRANA, Sep. 17 – President Bamir Topi said in his speech at the opening of the parliament that the parliament’s role in deepening the country’s reform remained indisputable.
The parliament plays an important role in approximating the Albanian legislation with that of the European Union and NATO, in which Albania hopes to become a member in the future.
Topi also appealed to both political camps to establish a close cooperation in that process.
The president made it clear again, following the meeting with both camps he organized earlier the same day, that the parliament should not lose time in reforming the judiciary.
The meeting decided to create a parliamentary committee that is to be assisted by local and international experts, for reform of the judiciary.
“The parliament’s role remains indisputable in successfully completing this process while the president will always be ready to act as a catalyst for the cohesion of the political forces in the assembly,” he said.
The president also reminded the parliament that electoral reform remained a top priority.
Following the speech, the parliament voted to extend the mandate of the parliamentary committee created for that process for another three months.
The president also urged the parliament to issue a resolution on the Kosova issue that would project the “will of all forces in Albania.”
“The Kosova issue needs stability, a unified and unequivocal stand and I am sure you all share such an opinion,” the President said.
