PODGORICA, March 19 – A trial opened in Montenegro on Wednesday against a man wanted in the United States for allegedly murdering a woman in New York while working as a cab driver there in 1990.
Smail Tulja, 67, a native of Montenegro, was arrested last year in his home in the Balkan country’s capital, Podgorica, on an FBI warrant forwarded to Interpol.
Tulja was charged with the slaying of Mary Beal, a 61-year-old Yugoslav immigrant who was reported missing in New York on Sept. 15, 1990. Three weeks later, her decapitated, dismembered body was found in two bags near the Brooklyn Navy Yard.
Tulja pleaded not guilty at the start of the proceedings.
