TIRANA, May 1 – A young man from the northern city of Shkodra protested against unemployment and poverty chaining himself up in the local memorial last Sunday, the International Workers’ Day.
The man who claimed to be the leader of local movement staged his protest alone, placing some placards at the memorial dedicated to four martyrs of democracy killed during protests to overthrow the communist regime in 1991.
“I am here alone because fear and lack of freedom of speech are major obstacles for citizens to join the protest,” said the young man through a megaphone.
The protester held placards reading “May 1, a day of protest and not holiday,” “Stop to silence and violence against freedom of expression.”
