TIRANA, Dec. 8 – December 8th has become a national day in Albania to celebrate the students’ protest in 1990 which forced the then-communist regime to accept political pluralism and allow the formation of new political groupings.
But it also serves as a dividing line in the country with both main political groupings celebrating it separately and also using it to accuse each other of not doing enough to accomplish the vision of the students in 1990.
Main opposition Democratic Party of Tirana Mayor Lulzim Basha accused the governing Socialist Party of Prime Minister Edi Rama of trying to cover its failure with attacks on the city hall ahead of the local elections expected next spring.
On the other side Rama tried to focus on the legacy of student protest for the country.
It was the students’ protest in 1990 which brought about the foundation of the Democratic Party first led by one of the students, Azem Hajdari, who was assassinated in 1998.
