TIRANA, July 18 – Fourteen people died and 12 others were injured, many of them seriously, last Saturday at about 5 p.m. when a bus fell off a cliff in northern Albania.
Police said that was caused from a sudden human error on the part of the driver. Earlier they had said a sudden downpour caused the accident.
The experts showed that the vehicle and the driver, who died, were in perfect shape and in line with all technical and documentation requirements.
The bus fell 30 to 40 meters off a cliff in Dom Gjegjan village, in the district of Puka, police said. The injured were brought to hospitals in the Albanian capital, Tirana, and the northern city of Shkodra.
President Bamir Topi, Prime Minister Sali Berisha and main opposition Socialist Party leader Edi Rama visited the injured at the Tirana hospital and promised urgent assistance.
The government declared Sunday a day of national mourning, with flags flying at half-mast.
Flags flew at half-staff across the country Sunday to remember the victims. All institutional, political and public activities were suspended during the day. A minute of silence was held in the early morning hours.
Doctors at the Military Hospital in Tirana say two children remain in critical condition.
