TIRANA, Aug. 22 – It is now 20 years that Albania and Germany have had diplomatic relations.
Prime Minister Sali Berisha said that the German aid to the tiny Balkan country has reached the figure of 700 million Euro.
It was Germany which hundreds of Albanians chose when they entered the western embassies in summer 1990 before the fall of communism.
And again this it was Germany which provided its full support to the country’s initial movement toward democratic post-communist life.
Germany’s new ambassador to Tirana, Bernd Borchardt, expressed his country’s support for Albania’s aspirations for integration into NATO and the European Union while on a trip to eastern Pogradec at a ceremony for German investment.
Borchardt said that Germany was a trusted friend and partner to Albania, adding that the consequent application of reforms is the main road toward integration into the bloc and Germany would support such a process.
“We are very grateful for such an aid and extraordinary solidarity that your country and government has proved to our country and nation during these years of freedom and democracy,” said Berisha.
