GJIROKASTRA, March 29 – Police discovered 180 kilograms of cannabis sativa and arrested two persons accused of allegedly trying to transport the drugs. Two others were still at large.
The hashish cultivated in Lazarat commune, Gjirokastra district, close to the Greek border, was supposed to be taken to the neighboring country.
Police said they had arrested Harilaos Loli, 22, and Mirel Ademi, 25, while two others, whose names were not given, are still at large.
Police learnt that the men were trying to transport the drugs first in a car and then by horse through the Sopot mountains.
Police are continuing the investigation to find the complete route used by the alleged traffickers.
In other operations in the capital Tirana police arrested Rei Vincani, 25, finding him with 8.6 grams of heroin he was supposed to sell, and Hasan Demiri, 34, with 114.4 grams of canabis sattiva.
Albania has set fighting drug trafficking as a main priority along with its efforts of integration into the European Union.
The tiny Balkan country serves as a place of origin for cannabis sativa and also a transit point for heroin coming from Asia.
