TIRANA, March 25 – The opposition is determined to work for the fall of the government of Prime Minister Sali Berisha, however, they appear to be reluctant to be blamed for harming the country’s chances of being invited to join NATO at the summit to be held in Bucharest April 2-4.
That is the reason the opposition has decided to stop anti-government protests and resume them the day following the Bucharest summit.
The five-party leftist opposition coalition hold Berisha responsible for the Gerdec March 15 tragedy which killed at least 22 persons and injured more than 300.
The opposition will resume the protests at Tirana’s Skanderbeg “to prove that unless this Berisha government leaves it has no moral basis to govern Albania and Albanians.”
The opposition has also said they will carefully check the reimbursement paid to the affected families from the Gerdec tragedy in an effort to avoid abuses.
Main opposition Socialist Party leader Edi Rama has called for Berisha to resign and relinquish his parliamentary immunity in order to assume legal responsibility for the tragedy.
They consider the Gerdec explosion “a crime linked to state corruption.” “The premier should not hide behind the majority he enjoys in the parliament but should request that his immunity be lifted, go to the prosecutor’s office, explain his acts and lack of actions and also immediately resign, according to Fatmir Xhafaj, another Socialist leader and lawmaker.
