HIMARA, April 11 – A group of some 70 Greek citizens of the southwestern port town of Himara stoned the police station to protest the arrests of two members of their organization, “Omonia”.
Albanian police were forced to fire warning shots into the air to disperse the protesters.
The two arrested men were activists and police charges claim they refused to show any identification as well as had resisted arrest, police said.
Police said protesters staged a violent protest which included anti-Albanian slogans including, “Police away from Himara”, “You violated our sons”, “We want Greek police to investigate in Himara”, and others.
Himara’s mayor, Vasil Bollano, accused the police of using brute force.
The two arrested protesters were kept at the police station for two hours and then released.
Police also suspended two policemen pending an investigation of the incident.
