TIRANA, Jan 12 – The Albanian government ratified its decision to pay some $48.2 million it owes to neighboring Greece from the 1987-1991 period dating to the past communist regime. That money was sought during the most difficult year at the end of the communist regime and the first post-communist year. The debt had to be paid back beginning in November.
At the same time it was learned that Albania also owes $37.2 million to China, $22 million to former Yugoslavia and $6.7 million to Swiss companies.
The government has also begun to negotiate rescheduling all debts with Russia, Britain, Austria, the Dutch and private companies.
