TIRANA, Jan 19 – A French company resumed work building Albania’s Club Med seaside resort village in southwestern Albania.
Authorities had to deploy a considerable number of police forces to stop local villagers protesting the work and blocking the road to the area.
Though the French company received permission for the work more than four years ago, it was not been able to begin construction until last week in Kakome, a village located in southernmost Albania facing the Greek island of Corfu.
Villagers making up some 129 families protested, complaining the company had not obtained the correct building permits.
Meanwhile, the villagers have taken their case to the appeals court after a first court ruled against the villagers, arguing that they had bought the land from the Ottoman Empire in 1878, so their claim was not valid because the Ottomans were occupiers.
Albanian Riviera is the local Albanian partner with the French Club Med.
Plans call for the tourism resort to build 350 luxury villas with 700 beds.
