TIRANA, March 25 – All Albanian citizens may now apply for new passports which comply to high standards required by the European Union and other countries.
The new biometric passports started to be offered this week.
The process was launched initially in Tirana where citizens could apply to the respective offices of each municipal unit.
The process of application for biometric passports is the same as that of applying for an electronic identity card. People should buy the necessary bill at the post office for the biometric passport as well.
Equipping Albanian citizens with new identity documents is of great importance for Albania’s integration process in the European Union and in particular for visa liberalization. Biometric passports will be an important argument for the liberalization of visas between Albania and the European Union.
The Ministry of Interior urges all Albanian citizens to apply for the new identity documents; electronic identity cards and biometric passports.
After more than two months some 300,000 people have received the new identity cards.
