TIRANA, April 1– Albania, which imports electricity to meet its domestic demands, started on Wednesday to export 2.2 GWh of electricity daily to Greece after rich rainfall filled the dams of the main hydropower plants in the country, Albania’s state-owned news agency ATA said.
According to the director of the production division of state-owned power utility KESH, Muharrem Stojku, the exports will last until the end of April.
This is the second power export deal between Albania and Greece this year. In January, Albania exported to its southern neighbor 2.2 GWh daily in the course of a month and a half.
During that time local media reported that Albania will continue to import electricity in compliance with contracts it had signed earlier.
Albania generated 3,849 GWh of electricity in 2008, up by 30 percent from 2007, and imported 2,475 GWh, or almost 40 percent of the total consumed power.
