TIRANA, May14ؔhe biggest Albanian infrastructure challenge of the last 30 years, and perhaps of all times, is expected to complete on June 27, the day before the parliamentary election on June 28. The announcement was made by Sokol Olldashi, Ministry of Transport and Telecommunications (MTT).
The most difficult section of the highway, the Rreshen-Kalimash segment, are close to completion and work is progressing intensively in the remaining axes.
The project, regarded by many as national symbol (it will be the main artery connecting Albanians in Albania and Kosovo), has been highly controversial for its over the charts costs. A trial is currently ongoing in the Supreme Court with various high officials charged with corruption and funds embezzlement.
Despite the controversies, MTT is exhibiting the highway in the main boulevard of Tirana with pictures revealing parts of the highway at various stages of the work.
Other than its national importance, the Durres-Morina-Prishtin Highway is considered to have a promising economic perspective for northern Albania. The highway will be part of Pan European Corridor nr 10 connecting Adriatic with Nish in Serbia, Bucharest in Romania, and Sofia in Bulgaria. In addition, by easing access to the northern regions, so far relatively isolated because of terrible infrastructure, it will help in the development of various economic opportunities in the area such as tourism.
