TIRANA, July 6؁lbanians are consuming less luxury goods in 2009. The Institute of Statistics (INSTAT) has reported a decrease in imports regarding excise goods such as fuel, cigarettes, alcoholic drinks, etc. Excise imports in March consisted of only 9% of total imports, a drop of 0.7% compared to February.
Petrol accounts for 63.2% of excise imports, and despite the slight decrease it is a good indicator of diminished purchasing power as a result of the global economic crisis.
The current drop in excise imports, if the trend is to continue, is expected to have a negative effect for the tax authorities regarding the tax revenues from this group of goods
