WEXFORD, Britain, Oct 26 – The real generosity of Wexford farmers was underlined last week as a very special herd of cattle was rounded up at the mart in Enniscorthy.
A total of seventy pregnant heifers were provided by the Model agricultural community for shipment to poverty stricken Albania.
“This is the biggest consignment ever from Wexford,” pointed out Monaseed based priest, Father Felix Byrne, one of the masterminds behind Bothar.
All the cattle concerned were Friesian type dairy livestock. They were duly dosed and haltered before being dispatched to the Balkans via Shannon airport, arriving in Albania.
The plan is that families lucky enough to receive one of the animals will in due course hand on the first female calf born to their Irish import to a neighbor’s farm.
“Everything is set up alright in Albania,” stressed Father Felix who has overseen consignments of animals depart from Wexford bound for countries in Eastern Europe and Africa every year since 1992. There is no question of the cattle being neglected.
The Bothar programme continues this week, with twenty more Wexford heifers being assembled for transit, this time for shipment to Rwanda in Africa.
