TIRANA, Aug 16 – The peak of the tourist season and the situation of the roads may be considered as two of the main factor resulting in 51 people killed in car accidents on road network in July, according to the Interior Ministry.
The top of the accidents occurred July 18 when 14 people were killed and 12 injured in the worst incident in northern Albania.
Police reported a total of 153 car accidents registered as hundreds of thousands of Albanian migrants and tourists entered the country for their summer holidays.
Albanian roads seem not to be ready yet to welcome such a significant increase of the number of cars.
Besides many national roads along the seaside are being rehabilitated. Moreover, the lack of the traffic signs remains a main issue of concern and cause of accidents.
The ministry said 131,000 more cars entered the country during July compared with same period last year.
Naturally one would also add the behavior of the Albanian drivers, who often do not respect the driving rules.
Fatal accidents in Albania have seen an alarming double-digit increase in recent years.
About 400 fatal car accidents are recorded in Albania every year, amounting to 13.9 deaths per 100,000 people, slightly higher than the EU average, according to a World Bank study.
The situation of the roads is not excluded from the political battle in the country.
The opposition Socialist party blames the government and police for the high figure of accidents. The Democratic Party-led government denies that saying that is due to the increase of the number of cars.
