TIRANA, May 3 – Having had an asylum request turned down, a man attempted to make up a story to boost his chances of obtaining asylum, but the plan has backfired. Femi Nezha, 34, was arrested by police for having staged an armed incident, which the man had reported to police a few days earlier. Police say that Nezha is suspected of having simulated the armed assault by firing a weapon against his uncle’s house and then removing the bullet casings from the scene.

Instead of immediately calling the police to report the crime, he called the local media to make sure the episode received enough coverage and then waited until the next day to call police. The man claimed he was inside the house when the said assault occurred. However, investigations revealed that the perpetrator was the 34-year old himself, who is believed of having staged the episode in order to obtain asylum in one of the EU countries. Police have seized the casings of bullets fired against the uncle’s house, which Nezha had tried to conceal.

The desperate man now faces charges such as illegal weapon possession and tampering with evidence. Investigations also revealed that the 34-year old had recently returned to Albania together with his family, after having his asylum application turned down by German authorities in April.
