TIRANA, Nov 28, 29 – On 28 November 2008 it was the 96th anniversary of proclamation of independence of Albania, always celebrated as a very important political, economic and social moment.
Nov 29 is the country’s liberation day from the Nazi occupiers during World War II. That is still part of the official protocol but now it is only the leftist parties that celebrate it as the governing Democratic Party-led coalition celebrate the liberation day on Nov 28.
That has turned into a political issue in the country. The Democrats claim that the communists had changed it to coincide with then-Yugoslavia liberation day.
But the leftist parties say that it must be decided by historians adding that the controversy must not blame or refute the honor of war veterans.
Thus, both political groups went separately and on different days at the Martyrs of the Nation cemetery to lay wreaths.
