Albania needs mobile phone banking, PM says

Mobile banking is not used in Albania, and the government wants to change that in cooperation with the mobile phone companies and the banks.

TIRANA, March 9 – Just a few years after getting the population at large used to banks for everyday transactions, the Albanian government’s digital ambition as grown even further – it wants people to bank with their mobile phones.
Although a practice is already in use elsewhere, mobile banking is mostly unheard off in Albania, and the government wants to change that in cooperation with the mobile phone companies and the banks.
Prime Minister Sali Berisha spoke about the initiative at a meeting with Finance Minister Ridvan Bode, State Minister Genc Pollo, Bank of Albania Governor Adrian Fullani and other leading experts from the areas of financial and electronic communications.
Mr. Berisha said the use of mobile phones for bank transactions by Albanian citizens should constitute a standard that must be achieved rapidly, as it offers greater convenience for all.
The government will draft a policy to push for an efficient action plan, in order to quickly move to high levels of internet use through mobile phones in Albania, according to Mr. Berisha.
