TIRANA, April 6–Albania will supply a total of 53.4 gigawatt hours (GWh) of electricity to three customers abroad this month after abundant rainfall filled the dams of the main hydropower plants in the country, said the ministry of energy ministry.
The customers are Kosovo, Greece and a Swiss company. Greece already exported power from Albania during February for a cost of 5 million EUR.
This is a new position that Albania is facing as an exporter when in previous years it always had to import energy at steep prices to cover its needs. The energy supply network is almost totally based in hydro resources which the country has plenty but a primitive distribution network and general backward infrastructure has kept it away from the full use of its potential.
According to METE, revenues from energy power exports will improve trade deficit that has suffered in 2008 and early 2009 due to the global economic crisis that has seen exports and trade volume in general shrink.
