TIRANA, May 7 – Albania will head the presidency of the Council of Europe this month, for the next six months. That is really something to be noted in this tiny western Balkan country, having the leading role in a top international institution.
The Council of Europe is mainly focused on democracy, human rights. Local democracy in its member countries are of special importance it helps them improve any time.
That is very strange for this country because though it has been in democracy in the last two decades it still needs much more to achieve international democratic standards.
Telling other countries to do or to apply democratic standards may often run counter to what is happening in this country.
There are many things that Albania should do to fulfill democratic standards, starting from the elections, such a fundamental right that it has not fully fulfilled.
But leadership of the Council of Europe for six month is likely to have positive impact on Albania too.
