TIRANA, Dec. 16 – Following the decree of the president nominating a senior bank official, Genti Sejko, as the candidate for the post of the central Bank of Albania governor, Socialists said the move was not coordinated with the leftist Socialist-led coalition of Prime Minister Edi Rama.
There have been voices among the Socialist lawmakers for not accepting that name as a low-level official. Others have openly said that President Bujar Nishani has made that without coordinating with them and have accused him of still playing the cards of the main opposition Democratic Party of Tirana Mayor Lulzim Basha trying to leave the country’s finances in difficulties now that the Socialists are in power.
However, Parliament Speaker Ilir Meta, leader of the Socialist Movement for Integration which is part of the governing coalition, has said that the new name needs to follow the procedure in the parliament. That is that first the parliamentary commission should approve and then send it for vote.
It seems very unlikely they will agree with the president’s nomination as they have all the required numbers in the 140- seat parliament.
Meanwhile Socialist lawmakers are calling on two members of the bank’s supervisory board to resign as they are in close working terms with a political party, the opposition Democrats, at a time when such a post obliges them to keep hands off the political affiliation.
The parliament should first complete the nine members of the board before the president should nominate one of its nine members to run for the governor.
The Bank of Albania was involved in a scandal since summer this year after it was learned that at least $7 million have been stolen from its offices. More than two dozen officials were arrested and are now facing trial, including its former governor, Ardian Fullani, who was fired from the post in September.
Prosecution has asked for 5-6 years of imprisonment for ten of those officials. Fullani will be judged in a separate trial accused of abuse of post.
