TIRANA, Sep 10 – Albania’s top policeman Hysni Burgaj said that the number of illegal immigrants coming from Asian and Middle East countries had significantly increased in the last three months.
Burgaj said that Gjirokastra police, in southern Albania, had stopped some 800 clandestine immigrants in the last three months. They have tried to enter Albania either through the border crossing points or walking along the mountains linking it with neighboring Greece.
Burgaj said they had increased police presence to stop such an illegal influx.
He also said that a small number of them had tried to cross from Macedonia too.
Most of them come from Middle East from countries such as Libya, Morocco, Syria, Iraq and a considerable number are Kurds.
They try to use Albania as a transit point to cross into Montenegro in the north and then to a European country.
