TIRANA, April 21 – Parliamentary Secretary for Foreign Affairs Richard Marles has become the first Australian government member to officially visit Albania where he met with the country’s Prime Minister Sali Berisha, foreign minister Edmond Haxhinasto and other top Albanian officials.
They discussed the two countries’ growing cooperation in a range of international organizations, and the future of Albania’s neighbor Kosovo and the Balkans.
Marles said there had been increased engagement between Australia and the eastern European country in recent years.
“My meeting with Deputy Defense Minister (Arjan) Starova allowed a review of our respective efforts in Afghanistan and enabled me to thank Albania for its contribution to the rebuilding efforts in that country,” he said in a statement on Saturday.
“Australia prides itself on our role in ensuring the issues confronting small states are considered in all international fora, whether it be the WTO, G20, the World Bank and IMF, or the UN,” Marles said.
