Berisha wants legal transparency on corruption claims

TIRANA, Oct. 5 – Prime Minister Sali Berisha on Monday urged the prosecutor’s office to start investigating any top officials and lawmakers publicly accused of corruption.
Berisha also urged the opposition Socialists to agree on lifting the parliamentary immunity on any officials the judiciary wants to investigate.
But he also added while speaking to the Democratic Party lawmakers, that “of course the law, the constitution is above the sides.” Prosecutors cannot start an investigation without first lifting the immunity of a top official.
The pressure had mounted on Prosecutor General Ina Rama to act for some time, and on Tuesday she said they have already started some investigations based on the public declarations of the past few weeks.
In the last two months, first the opposition Socialists, but the governing Democrats too, started to accuse each other of corruption, mentioning specific top officials.
