Bojaxhi appointed chief construction inspector

TIRANA, April 8 – Former director of the Albanian Power Corporation (KESH), Gjergj Bojaxhi, has been appointed the chief inspector of the National Construction and Urban Inspectorate. Introducing the new chief inspector, Public Works Minister Sokol Olldashi said the appointment came after the new changes to the law regarding the Construction Inspectorate entered into force giving a new dimension to the work of the Inspectorate.
“We have had and continue having a problem with the situation of illegal buildings in territories and with the territory control,” said Olldashi, convinced that Bojaxhi’s appointment and the changes to the law would improve the Inspectorate’s performance.
Olldashi said that both citizens and local government institutions were abusing the law by making constructing buildings illegally, implying the recent conflict with the municipality of Tirana over the reconstruction of the central square of Skanderbeg.
Meanwhile, Bojaxhi said he viewed the illegal construction phenomenon as a cancer continuing to deform urban spaces in Albanian towns and villages and as a clear evasion of taxes affecting the revenues of local government.
The Inspectorate’s priority areas will be road and energy axes, national parks, green areas in Tirana and coastal areas which will be cleared of illegal construction.
“This will be a difficult but necessary process so that Albania has a sustainable urban and economic development,” said Bojaxhi.
Bojaxhi who also served as deputy Economy Minister from 2005 to 2007 resigned as general director of the Albanian Power Corporation in October 2009.
