TIRANA, Dec. 24 – Carmina Burana, originally a musical by Germany’s Carl Orff, will make a comeback as a ballet in Tirana with choreography by Hungary’s famous Youri Vamos after its premiere in the frame of the German October events.
“The central topic of my choreography is the human beings’ stance towards the laws of nature. Those challenging their harmony are destined to fail,” says the Hungarian choreographer.
“In my concept, which is unveiled through the language of ballet, I was inspired by the music in this work despite the lyrics. It is a coincidence that some acts of this ballet correspond to the lyrics. This fact is once again testimony to the impressive character of Orff’s music,” adds the choreographer.
The ballet will feature Albanian soprano Eriona Gjyzeli, Italian baritone Carlo Checchi, Kosovo countertenor Safet Berisha and Albanian ballet dancers Adela Mucollari, Ledia Sulaj, Ervis Nallbani and Erald Zela.
Carmina Burana is a young classic of musical history. Brilliant in simplicity, insistent in rhythm, eternally young thematically, it lends imagination wings surely more than any other musical work of the twentieth century.
Youri Và¡mos supplies this suggestive power in Orff’s music with a pronouncedly simple setting. The appearance of the stage is defined not by scenery, but by the silhouette of the entire chorus and orchestra. Before this background and by means of sheer dance Và¡mos unfolds a sparkling hymn to pure love.
The ballet is scheduled to stage again at the National Theatre of Opera and Ballet in Tirana on December 28, 29 and 30.
