Chromium ‘miners’ fight with each other

BULQIZA, April 28 – Two groups of people used Kalashnikov automatic rifles to resolve their dispute over areas where they could take out chromium ore in the northern town of Bulqiza. Opposing groups of people were fighting which one of them would ‘own’ one of the former mine tunnels where they privately extracted chromium ore. Left chromium ore has turned into a main source of living for many residents in Bulqiza. They sell the chromium to private companies operating in the area. (Tirana Times Staff)
