TIRANA, June 9 – Vladimir Kristo, head of Albania’s Constitutional Court, took part at the ceremonies to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Venice Commission.
The commission has been used in the past and is likely to play a role again in resolving the Albanian political crisis with the opposition asking for the partial vote recount, something which is considered as breaking the laws and the Constitution by the government
The European Commission and the European Parliament are mediating the solution of the deadlock and very likely they will force Albanian political factors to use the Venice Commission expertise to resolve their dispute.
The European Commission for Democracy through Law, better known as the Venice Commission, is the Council of Europe’s advisory body on constitutional matters. Established in 1990, the commission has played a leading role in the adoption of constitutions that conform to the standards of Europe’s constitutional heritage.
Initially conceived as a tool for emergency constitutional engineering, the commission has become an internationally recognized independent legal think-tank.
It contributes to the dissemination of the European constitutional heritage, based on the continent’s fundamental legal values while continuing to provide “constitutional first-aid” to individual states. The Venice Commission also plays a unique and unrivaled role in crisis management and conflict prevention through constitution building and advice.
During his visit Kristo met with head of the Commission Gianni Buqui詩o and other members, including counterparts from other countries.
