TIRANA, Nov. 27 – Macedonian authorities have seized more than half a ton of marijuana in a truck at a border crossing with Albania and arrested the driver. Police said the 540 kilograms of the drug had an estimated market value of USD 3.9 million. Interior Minister Gordana Jankulovska described Monday’s seizure as the largest single batch of marijuana ever confiscated in Macedonia.
According to police, the drug had been produced in Albania and was to have been smuggled into western Europe.
Albania is a country of origin for producing the cannabis and a transit point for heroin coming from Asia. Police has confiscated many tons of that, only in southwestern Vlore district some six tons this year.
Fighting drug traffic remains a top goal and daily work for the country’s authorities, especially the law enforcement ones.
