TIRANA, March 19 – The General Customs Directorate announced the suspension of eight employees on suspicions of smuggling at the main Albania-Greece border crossing near the village of Kakavija.
Five of the employees, who now are under investigation by prosecutors, work at the Kakavija crossing. The other three are members of the anti-smuggling directorate.
The group was installed at this border crossing by the Directorate General of Customs to monitor the movement of trade.
Customs officials say the suspensions came when two trucks were allowed to cross without clearing customs. The trucks were loaded with industrial goods which needed to pay customs duties.
The Customs Investigation Department has also filed charges against two business owners in charge of bringing the goods into Albania.
