TIRANA, Nov. 16 – Director General for Enlargement at the European Commission Christian Danielsson said in Tirana this week that the European Union expects from Albania more positive results in the fight against corruption.
During his address at the conference “Together in the fight against corruption” held in Tirana, Danielson said that corruption has impacted the lives of Albanians, public administration and services, economy and hindered the country’s development and labor market.
According to him, European Union will help the small Balkan country in the fight against corruption.
“Albania is not alone in its efforts against European Union is standing by Albania in this fight against corruption,” Danielsson said. “Political will must be transformed into firmness to fight corruption and help its victims such as ordinary citizens, students and entrepreneurs. People must abide to the rule of law and not rule of money and criminal groups.”
Danielson welcomed the decision of European Union to recommend opening accession talks with Albania and underlined the importance of progress in the implementation of justice reform.
“The country needs a fair and independent judicial system. It is also important for the country to fight corruption and conflict of interest in public services,” he added.
According to Danielsson, declaration of wealth and assets is crucial for the reform in judiciary and public administration and as such will improve the country’s European future.
“Europe’s message for Albania is to continue its efforts in the fight against corruption so that it can improve its situation and move closer to the Union,” he said.
In his visit to Albania, Danielsson held several meetings with Prime Minister Edi Rama, Speaker Ilir Meta, Opposition Leader Lulzim Basha and other high rank officials.
