TIRANA, Nov. 20 – President Bamir Topi held a visit to Brussels, Belgium in an official visit to the European Union headquarters.
Topi met with EU foreign policy commissioner Javier Solana to talk on Albania’s integration efforts into the bloc, the political situation, reforms and other efforts along the process of integration, foreign policy, situation in the region and Kosova.
In June 2006 Albania signed the Stabilization and Association Agreement with the European Union, considered as the first step toward membership. All EU member countries should ratify it (11 have already done) before the country passes on to another stage, that of candidacy.
Solana made it very clear to Topi that the SAA had very well defined efforts that the country should undertake. He insisted that the country should continue reforms in the judiciary, electoral code, organized crime and corruption.
Topi joined his appeal to the political forces in the country to cooperate on the major issues challenging the country.
Solana also said that resolving the Kosova status was very important to the EU.
A day earlier Topi met for half an hour with Prime Minister Sali Berisha. They have likely discussed the country’s steps toward membership into the EU but also other issues like the dismissal of Prosecutor General Theodhori Sollaku or the Kosova status.
