TIRANA, June 01؇ermany is one of the main donators to Albania regarding the energy sector. According to data from the Ministry of Economy, Commerce, and Energy (METE), Germany has contributed close to 800 million euro since 1998 in different investment projects in different sectors all over the country.
Over the last ten years the Germans have financed a total of 178 million euro in energy and the trend is set to continue.
According to media, KfW (Reconstruction Credit Insititute), a German government-owned development bank, will continue to fund a wide variety of projects, including a transmission line of 400 kilovolts between Tirana and Montenegro. Other projects will aim to improve production, transmission and distribution of energy in south Albania.
Only last year, the German government agreed to finance two important projects: the 110 kilovolt transmission line in the South and the construction of a 400 kilovolt line between Tirana and Prishtina for the cost of 42 million euro.
The World Bank is another important donator to the energy sector. Albania became a member of the international institution in 1992 and since then tens of projects have been financed by the Bank to improve the country’s energy network, distribution, and the creation of new energy sources.
“The World Bank has been engaged in the Albanian energy sector since 1992 through the financing of investment projects in the sector, coordination of donors, and constructive dialogue on policies. Since Albania became a member, the Bank’s total financing to the country amounts to close to 1 billion USD,” sources from the WB stated.
The Bank remains one of the main consultants to the Albanian government regarding reforms in the energy sector.
