TIRANA, Jan. 15 – In a letter addressed to Genc Ruli, Minister of Economy, Trade and Energy, the country directors of the World Bank, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), the German KfW and Switzerland expressed concern over the absence of a concrete plan of action for the energy sector from the Albanian government, according to Shqip newspaper.

The donors write they have previously specified, in the last donors meeting on November 2007, the need for such a plan of action in order to address the short and long term needs of the energy sector in Albania.

The newspaper writes that donors argue in their letter that despite their support, the Government approval and implementation of such plan of action will guarantee the development of the energy sector in the future.

Donors also threatened that without that strategy it would be difficult for them to release the funding of some $250 million dollars for different energy projects in Albania.

The country has been in the midst of a constant power crisis during the last two years due to the lack of rain (hydro power plants produce the bulk of the energy in the country) and poor management.
