TIRANA, Dec. 2 – Parliament Speaker Ilir Meta visited Germany this week, focusing on convincing German businesses to invest in Albania.

Meta visited the Westphalia region where he met with senior state officials.

He also met with German lawmakers and discussed Albania’s European integration process, the security situation in the region and Europe, the crisis of refugees and areas of cooperation between Albania and the Westphalia region, particularly in technology, energy and professional education, according to an official statement.

Meta said reforms undertaken by Tirana will create a safer climate for foreign investments in Albania, a country that offers great opportunities.

German businesses are interested in the energy sector and also urged Albania learn from the German experience in that field.

But the judicial reform Albania is undertaking now will be of fundamental importance in attracting foreign investors, according to Meta.

During the meeting at the Bundestag, the German parliament, Meta also discussed on the ways of employing Albanians legally in Germany.

More than 50,000 Albanians have gone to Germany this year asking for political asylum.

Germany has formally included Albania in the list of the safe countries, which means their asylum requests will be quickly denied and deportation will follow.

Germany is offering new ways of legal employment saying they will accept up to 20,000 new employees from the Balkans every year under a new program.
