TIRANA, Dec. 22 – The Italian government has shown its interest in building nuclear plants in “neighboring countries” and not in Italian soil, Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi said on Saturday in state of the nation statement.
“We have been in a permanent risk for blackouts, while our economy has suffered by high costs of electricity,” Berlusconi said, quoted by Adnkronos news agency.
“We have signed new agreements with Libya, Algeria and Albania and this strategy will diversify our sources,” Berlusconi added.
Albanian Prime Minister Sali Berisha has declared repeatedly that “is willing to host a nuclear plant in Albania.”
Italian energy giant Enel is working to build a controversial 2 billion euro coal fired Thermal Power Plant, in the Porto Romano area, near Durres.
