The Italian Language Week was inaugurated on Oct. 6 with an event dedicated to the Italian academic system and the award of four scholarships to Albanian students to study in Italian universities. Events continued at the “Work and Study” trade fair in Tirana where the initiative “Italian language in Albania, a source of employment” was unveiled. The Italian Institute of Culture also opened its doors to the public on Oct. 17 and 18 showcasing its services such as language courses, access to library and projecting some recent movies.
Two Italian books translated into Albanian will also be promoted. Several Swiss movies are scheduled to screen at the Marubi film school. The Swiss embassy is also organizing two concerts by Francesco Pervangher in Tirana and Shkodra on Oct. 30 and 31.
A conference on Albania’s 100th anniversary of independence and Italy’s 150th anniversary of unification will conclude celebrations of the Italian Language Week in Albania. Apart from Tirana, events have also been scheduled in Gjirokastra, Berat, Elbasan, Korca, Shkodra and Vlora,
The annual Italian Language Week around the world, now in its twelfth year, aims to promote Italian language and culture throughout the world. The theme chosen by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs for 2012 is “Italy of territories- Italy of the future.”
The Week of the Italian Language in the World is an international cultural event that takes place annually in October promoted by the Accademia della Crusca in co-operation with the Directorate General for the Promotion of the “Country System” of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. It serves as a testament directed to all those who recognize the universality of Italian language, art and culture.
Back in 2011, a series of cultural events were held in Albania to mark Italy’s 150th anniversary of unification. The biggest event held last November was the Otello opera, a lyric tragic drama in four acts composed by Giuseppe Verdi.
Earlier in 2010, dozens of activities were held in Albania for more than three months in the frame of “Italy, Albania, Two Peoples, One Sea, One Friendship” season of cultural events.
A strategic partner and key contributor to Albania’s development, Italy is also Albania’s top trade partner. More than 400,000 Albanian migrants live and work in Italy.
