TIRANA, April 26 – Kosovo authorities held Sunday near Prizren the inaugural ceremony for the construction of the V쳭ica-Merdare highway.
The ceremony was attended by thousands of citizens as well as Kosovar and Albanian leaders.
Prime Minister Hashim Tha詠said that the highway, connecting Kosovo to Albania, is the biggest and most important project undertaken since the declaration of independence.
“We are starting a road that joins us emotionally and physically to one another in Europe,” Tha詠said. Albanian Prime Minister Sali Berisha said that the eyes of all Albanians were on the Kosovo highway.
“It will not be long before this corridor brings gains to Serbia, and not less than those too Albania, Macedonia and Kosovo,” Berisha added.
Berisha also enthusiastically said that his country would start the building of the railway link to Kosovo.
The new highway in Kosovo will be linked with that of Albania, which was inaugurated last year. Part of it is still being worked upon and is expected to be open in mid-May.
The same company that built the Albanian main section, that of Rreshen-Kalimash and a 5.5-kilometer long tunnel, the US-Turkish group Bechtel-Enka, will build that of Kosovo too.
